Why this one is hard to judge by eye

A blue whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a Diplodocus end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. A gap of 8% is invisible without a shared baseline: on the ground line above, a Diplodocus stops 2 m (6.56 ft) short of a blue whale.

Blue Whale. Blue whales are measured along the body, snout to tail notch. Published maxima run past 30 m for the largest females recorded, so any single figure is a mid-range choice rather than a ceiling.

Diplodocus. Diplodocus is quoted nose to tail tip, and the tail is close to half of it. Vertebra counts differ between specimens, so published lengths move by several metres.
