Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A blue whale is drawn about 2.23 times as wide as a whale shark as well as 2.23 times its length, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A blue whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a whale shark end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Blue Whale. Blue whales are measured along the body, snout to tail notch. Published maxima run past 30 m for the largest females recorded, so any single figure is a mid-range choice rather than a ceiling.
Whale Shark. Whale sharks are measured total length. They are the largest fish alive, and published averages run several metres below the largest confirmed individuals, which is why figures differ so much.
A blue whale and a whale shark are both quoted as a length, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
