Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A cricket pitch is drawn about 5.03 times as wide as a giant squid as well as 5.03 times its length, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A cricket pitch sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a giant squid end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Cricket Pitch. A cricket pitch is measured wicket to wicket, twenty-two yards, a length inherited from the surveying chain. The rest of the ground has no fixed size whatever.
Giant Squid. Giant squid are quoted standard length, mantle and head only, with the two long feeding tentacles left out. Counting those roughly doubles the number, which is where the wilder figures come from.
