Giraffe vs African Elephant: taller by how much?
A giraffe measures 5.3 m (17.4 ft) from the ground up, and an African elephant measures 3.2 m (10.5 ft) from the ground up. An African elephant would have to grow by 66% to match a giraffe, which is 1.66 times its height. Put the other way round, an African elephant covers 60% of a giraffe on the axis both are judged on. A giraffe and an African elephant are both written in single metres, and the 66% between them is the whole of the difference.
| Object | Real size | Axis measured | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giraffe | 5.3 m 17.4 ft |
Height | Male |
| African Elephant | 3.2 m 10.5 ft |
Height | Bull |
Both figures, Giraffe and African Elephant, come from the Size It Up measurement set, one real-world size and one measured axis per object, last checked in September 2026; outline provenance is listed on the sources page.
Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A giraffe sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and an African elephant end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. On the drawing above a giraffe is about 1.30 times as tall as it is wide and an African elephant about 1.62 times as wide as it is tall, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.
What each figure covers
Giraffe. Giraffes are measured to the top of the head with the neck upright. Published heights run from about 5 m to 5.7 m depending on sex, population, and whether the horns are counted.
African Elephant. Shoulder height, not height to the top of the head, is the standard for elephants. Published figures drift between roughly 3 m and 3.5 m depending on whether the animal is an average bull or a record one.
A giraffe and an African elephant are both quoted as a height, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
Measured the same way, Giraffe at 5.3 m sits within a tenth of Dialga at 5.4 m and Bumblebee at 4.9 m. African Elephant at 3.2 m has African Bush Elephant at 3.2 m, Woolly Mammoth at 3 m and Groudon at 3.5 m for company, within a tenth. Swapping any of those in for a giraffe would move its ratio to an African elephant by less than 10%.
