How much taller is a giraffe than a grizzly bear?
A giraffe measures 5.3 m (17.4 ft) from the ground up, and a grizzly bear measures 2.5 m (8.2 ft) from the ground up. A grizzly bear would have to grow by 112% to match a giraffe, which is 2.12 times its height. Take 2 grizzly bears stacked up and you reach 5 m (16.4 ft), still 30 cm (11.8 in) short of a giraffe; one more would overshoot by 2.2 m (7.22 ft). A giraffe and a grizzly bear are both written in single metres, so the 2.12-to-one gap has to be read off the digits rather than off the unit.
| Object | Real size | Axis measured | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giraffe | 5.3 m 17.4 ft |
Height | Male |
| Grizzly Bear | 2.5 m 8.2 ft |
Height | Average Male |
Both figures, Giraffe and Grizzly Bear, come from the Size It Up measurement set, one real-world size and one measured axis per object, last checked in September 2026; outline provenance is listed on the sources page.
Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A giraffe is drawn about 3.79 times as wide as a grizzly bear as well as 2.12 times its height, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A giraffe sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a grizzly bear end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Giraffe. Giraffes are measured to the top of the head with the neck upright. Published heights run from about 5 m to 5.7 m depending on sex, population, and whether the horns are counted.
Grizzly Bear. This is the upright height, the bear standing on its hind legs. On all fours the same animal is roughly half that, which is why the two figures are so often confused.
A giraffe and a grizzly bear are both quoted as a height, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
Measured the same way, Giraffe at 5.3 m sits within a tenth of Dialga at 5.4 m and Bumblebee at 4.9 m. Grizzly Bear at 2.5 m has London Phone Box at 2.51 m, Thanos at 2.52 m and Ostrich at 2.4 m for company, within a tenth. Swapping any of those in for a giraffe would move its ratio to a grizzly bear by less than 10%.
