How big is a giraffe next to a person?
A giraffe measures 5.3 m (17.4 ft) from the ground up, and a person measures 1.71 m (5.61 ft) from the ground up. A giraffe comes to 3.10 times the height of a person, a difference of 3.59 m (11.8 ft). Take 3 people stacked up and you reach 5.13 m (16.8 ft), still 17 cm (6.69 in) short of a giraffe; one more would overshoot by 1.54 m (5.05 ft). A giraffe and a person are both written in single metres, so the 3.10-to-one gap has to be read off the digits rather than off the unit.

Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A giraffe is drawn about 6.82 times as wide as a person as well as 3.10 times its height, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A giraffe sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a person end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. On the drawing above a giraffe is about 1.30 times as tall as it is wide and a person about 2.85 times as tall as it is wide, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.
What each figure covers
Giraffe. Giraffes are measured to the top of the head with the neck upright. Published heights run from about 5 m to 5.7 m depending on sex, population, and whether the horns are counted.
Human. The 1.71 m is a global average for adult men across populations. National averages spread by more than fifteen centimetres around it, so it is a reference rather than a typical person.
A giraffe and a person are both quoted as a height, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
