Giraffe vs Saltwater Crocodile: bigger by how much?
A giraffe measures 5.3 m (17.4 ft) from the ground up, and a saltwater crocodile measures 4.5 m (14.8 ft) end to end. That puts a giraffe at 1.18 times the measured size of a saltwater crocodile: 80 cm (31.5 in) of difference, 18%. The two are not judged on the same axis: a giraffe is quoted as a height and a saltwater crocodile as a length, so the honest statement is one figure against the other, 85% of it, and not one outline against another. A giraffe and a saltwater crocodile are both written in single metres, and the 18% between them is the whole of the difference.

Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A giraffe sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a saltwater crocodile end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. A gap of 18% is invisible without a shared baseline: on the ground line above, a saltwater crocodile stops 80 cm (31.5 in) short of a giraffe. On the drawing above a giraffe is about 1.30 times as tall as it is wide and a saltwater crocodile about 5.23 times as wide as it is tall, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.
What each figure covers
Giraffe. Giraffes are measured to the top of the head with the neck upright. Published heights run from about 5 m to 5.7 m depending on sex, population, and whether the horns are counted.
Saltwater Crocodile. Saltwater crocodiles are measured snout to tail tip. Records above six metres exist but are rare, and average adult males sit well below them.
A giraffe is quoted as a height and a saltwater crocodile as a length: two conventions, so the ratio compares the two numbers rather than the two objects.
What else is about that size?
Measured the same way, Giraffe at 5.3 m sits within a tenth of Dialga at 5.4 m and Bumblebee at 4.9 m. Saltwater Crocodile at 4.5 m has Kyogre at 4.5 m, Land Rover Defender 110 at 4.6 m and London Black Cab at 4.6 m for company, within a tenth. Swapping any of those in for a giraffe would move its ratio to a saltwater crocodile by less than 10%.
