How much bigger is a killer whale than a giraffe?
A killer whale measures 7.3 m (24 ft) end to end, and a giraffe measures 5.3 m (17.4 ft) from the ground up. A giraffe would have to grow by 38% to match a killer whale, which is 1.38 times its measured size. The two are not judged on the same axis: a killer whale is quoted as a length and a giraffe as a height, so the honest statement is one figure against the other, 73% of it, and not one outline against another. Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A killer whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a giraffe end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. On the drawing above a killer whale is about 2.65 times as wide as it is tall and a giraffe about 1.30 times as tall as it is wide, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.
What each figure covers
Killer Whale. Killer whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run a couple of metres longer than females, and the dorsal fin, which is what everyone pictures, is not part of the figure.
Giraffe. Giraffes are measured to the top of the head with the neck upright. Published heights run from about 5 m to 5.7 m depending on sex, population, and whether the horns are counted.
A killer whale is quoted as a length and a giraffe as a height: two conventions, so the ratio compares the two numbers rather than the two objects.
What else is about that size?
