How big is a killer whale next to a person?

Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A killer whale is drawn about 12.2 times as wide as a person as well as 4.27 times its measured size, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A killer whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a person end up filed under the same vague heading of very large. On the drawing above a killer whale is about 2.65 times as wide as it is tall and a person about 2.85 times as tall as it is wide, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.
What each figure covers
Killer Whale. Killer whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run a couple of metres longer than females, and the dorsal fin, which is what everyone pictures, is not part of the figure.
Human. The 1.71 m is a global average for adult men across populations. National averages spread by more than fifteen centimetres around it, so it is a reference rather than a typical person.
