The outline of Mount Everest that most people carry comes from a world map, and every projection that keeps angles true stretches whatever sits far from the equator; the outline of Mont Blanc above is scaled from measured distances instead.
What each figure covers
Mount Everest. Height above sea level, revised to 8,848.86 m by a joint survey in 2020. The rock beneath the summit snow is a few metres lower, and which figure should count has been argued for a century.
Mont Blanc. Height above sea level. The summit carries a dome of ice whose thickness changes from year to year, so the official figure is re-surveyed rather than fixed once.
Mount Everest and Mont Blanc are both quoted as a height, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
