Smaug vs Football Pitch: which one wins, and by how little?

Smaug measures 110 m (360.9 ft) end to end, and a football pitch measures 105 m (344.5 ft) end to end. That puts Smaug at 1.05 times the length of a football pitch: 5 m (16.4 ft) of difference, 5%. Put the other way round, a football pitch covers 95% of Smaug on the axis both are judged on. Smaug and a football pitch are both written in hundreds of metres, and the 5% between them is the whole of the difference.

Both figures, Smaug and Football Pitch, come from the Size It Up measurement set, one real-world size and one measured axis per object, last checked in September 2026; outline provenance is listed on the sources page.

Why this one is hard to judge by eye

Smaug has never been measured, only stated: the figure comes from its source and moves when the source is redrawn, while a football pitch can be checked with a tape, so this pair sets a decision against a measurement. Nothing this size arrives at the eye whole: Smaug reaches you as a small angle from wherever you can stand back far enough to see it, and the brain fills the rest in from what it expects, which is how 5 m of difference goes unnoticed. A gap of 5% is invisible without a shared baseline: on the ground line above, a football pitch stops 5 m (16.4 ft) short of Smaug.

What each figure covers

Smaug. The length is the film design, measured nose to tail. The book gives no size at all, describing only that the dragon fills the hall.

Football Pitch. A football pitch has no single legal size. The laws allow a range, and 105 m is the length fixed for international matches, which is the only reason it works as a reference at all.

Smaug and a football pitch are both quoted as a length, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.

What else is about that size?

Measured the same way, Smaug at 110 m sits within two fifths of Airbus A380 at 72.7 m and Quidditch Pitch at 152.4 m. Football Pitch at 105 m has Airbus A380 at 72.7 m for company, within two fifths. Swapping any of those in for Smaug would move its ratio to a football pitch by less than 40%.
