How big is a sperm whale compared to a killer whale?
A sperm whale measures 16 m (52.5 ft) end to end, and a killer whale measures 7.3 m (24 ft) end to end. A killer whale would have to grow by 119% to match a sperm whale, which is 2.19 times its length. Take 2 killer whales laid end to end and you reach 14.6 m (47.9 ft), still 1.4 m (4.59 ft) short of a sperm whale; one more would overshoot by 5.9 m (19.4 ft). A sperm whale is written in tens of metres and a killer whale in single metres, a whole band of scale apart.
| Object | Real size | Axis measured | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sperm Whale | 16 m 52.5 ft |
Length | Average Male |
| Killer Whale | 7.3 m 24 ft |
Length | Average Male |
Both figures, Sperm Whale and Killer Whale, come from the Size It Up measurement set, one real-world size and one measured axis per object, last checked in September 2026; outline provenance is listed on the sources page.
Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A sperm whale is drawn about 2.19 times as wide as a killer whale as well as 2.19 times its length, so the area it takes in the frame grows faster than the figure anyone quotes. A sperm whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a killer whale end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Sperm Whale. Sperm whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run far larger than females, and about a third of the body is the head, which holds the largest brain of any animal.
Killer Whale. Killer whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run a couple of metres longer than females, and the dorsal fin, which is what everyone pictures, is not part of the figure.
A sperm whale and a killer whale are both quoted as a length, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
Measured the same way, Sperm Whale at 16 m sits within a tenth of Megalodon at 16 m and Spinosaurus at 14.5 m. Killer Whale at 7.3 m has Football Goal at 7.56 m and Stegosaurus at 7 m for company, within a tenth. Swapping any of those in for a sperm whale would move its ratio to a killer whale by less than 10%.
