How big is a sperm whale compared to a T. rex?
A sperm whale measures 16 m (52.5 ft) end to end, and a T. rex measures 12 m (39.4 ft) end to end. That puts a sperm whale at 1.33 times the length of a T. rex: 4 m (13.1 ft) of difference, 33%. Put the other way round, a T. rex covers 75% of a sperm whale on the axis both are judged on. Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A sperm whale sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a T. rex end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Sperm Whale. Sperm whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run far larger than females, and about a third of the body is the head, which holds the largest brain of any animal.
T. rex. T. rex is quoted nose to tail. Specimens differ by metres, and the largest known individual is considerably longer than the average used here.
A sperm whale and a T. rex are both quoted as a length, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
