Why this one is hard to judge by eye

Nothing this size arrives at the eye whole: the Statue of Liberty reaches you as a small angle from wherever you can stand back far enough to see it, and the brain fills the rest in from what it expects, which is how 48.2 m of difference goes unnoticed. On the drawing above the Statue of Liberty is about 2.46 times as tall as it is wide and a Diplodocus about 3.47 times as wide as it is tall, so the two outlines fill the frame in ways that have nothing to do with the one axis being compared.

What each figure covers

Statue of Liberty. The 73.2 m includes the pedestal. The statue alone is 46 m heel to torch, and counting the star fort beneath brings the total to 93 m, so three different correct figures circulate.

Diplodocus. Diplodocus is quoted nose to tail tip, and the tail is close to half of it. Vertebra counts differ between specimens, so published lengths move by several metres.

The Statue of Liberty is quoted as a height and a Diplodocus as a length: two conventions, so the ratio compares the two numbers rather than the two objects.
