Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A whale shark sits in the range with no handy yardstick: too big to hold against anything you have carried, too small to need a horizon, so it and a killer whale end up filed under the same vague heading of very large.
What each figure covers
Whale Shark. Whale sharks are measured total length. They are the largest fish alive, and published averages run several metres below the largest confirmed individuals, which is why figures differ so much.
Killer Whale. Killer whales are measured snout to tail notch. Males run a couple of metres longer than females, and the dorsal fin, which is what everyone pictures, is not part of the figure.
A whale shark and a killer whale are both quoted as a length, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
