Is a wine bottle really taller than a sheet of A4 paper?
A wine bottle measures 30 cm (11.8 in) from the ground up, and a sheet of A4 paper measures 29.7 cm (11.7 in) from the ground up. A wine bottle leads by 3 mm (0.1 in), 1%, which is too little to see until the two share a ground line. Put the other way round, a sheet of A4 paper covers 99% of a wine bottle on the axis both are judged on. A wine bottle and a sheet of A4 paper are both written in tens of centimetres, and the 1% between them is the whole of the difference.
| Object | Real size | Axis measured | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wine Bottle | 30 cm 11.8 in |
Height | Ground to highest point |
| A4 Paper | 29.7 cm 11.7 in |

Both figures, Wine Bottle and A4 Paper, come from the Size It Up measurement set, one real-world size and one measured axis per object, last checked in September 2026; outline provenance is listed on the sources page.
Why this one is hard to judge by eye
A sheet of A4 paper is drawn about 2.93 times as wide as a wine bottle above while measuring 99% as much on the axis that counts. That is the trade the eye gets wrong: it reads width as size. Both shapes fit in a single glance here, which is exactly why the 1% between a wine bottle and a sheet of A4 paper slips past: at this size the eye compares whole outlines, and the figures above compare one axis. A gap of 1% is invisible without a shared baseline: on the ground line above, a sheet of A4 paper stops 3 mm (0.1 in) short of a wine bottle.
What each figure covers
Wine Bottle. The standard bottle holds 750 ml, a volume fixed long before the height was. The height follows from the volume and the thickness of the glass rather than the other way round.
A4 Paper. A4 is not a round number by accident. Every A size holds the same proportions, and halving one gives the next, which is why 297 mm keeps turning up as a household ruler.
A wine bottle and a sheet of A4 paper are both quoted as a height, which is what makes the ratio above a like-for-like figure.
What else is about that size?
Measured the same way, Wine Bottle at 30 cm sits within a tenth of Buzz Lightyear at 30 cm, Eevee at 30 cm and Tarsier at 28 cm. A4 Paper at 29.7 cm has Buzz Lightyear at 30 cm, Eevee at 30 cm and Tarsier at 28 cm for company, within a tenth. Swapping any of those in for a wine bottle would move its ratio to a sheet of A4 paper by less than 10%.
